Argentine justice has granted house arrest to one of the accused in the death of Liam Payne, the former member of the British band One Direction who fell from a third floor at the Hotel CasaSur in the Palermo neighborhood. The accused is Brian Nahuel Paiz, the waiter suspected of the alleged drug delivery to the artist, who died on October 16, 2024. The National Chamber of Criminal and Correctional Appeals granted the suspect house arrest with an electronic ankle bracelet. The defense requested the benefit, arguing that the accused had health problems during his stay in a police detention center, but the prosecution opposed the motion, and the trial court dismissed it. The Chamber of Appeals stated that Paiz has no criminal record, a fixed address, and there is no flight risk. The autopsy confirmed that Payne had a mixed substance of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescribed antidepressant in his body, which caused the young man to "not be fully conscious or was in a state of significant diminution or abolition of consciousness at the time of the fall".
